ترجع قصة المثل لأنه في أحد الأيام قام لص بسرقة النقود من متجر غلال وخرج مهرولا فأسرع ورائه صاحب المتجر، وعندما تعثر اللص في شوال عدس وانتشر العدس في الأرض ظن الناس أنه سرق بعض العدس ليأكله، ولاموا التاجر على قسوته، فرد التاجر قائلا: "اللي ميعرفش يقول عدس!".
